In Memory of Cal Armstrong

It is with great sadness that ACA Howe International Limited announces the death of its Managing Director Dr. Cal Armstrong on Tuesday September 8th, 2009, peacefully in his sleep following a long illness.

Cal Armstrong was born in London in 1943. He graduated in Geology from Manchester University in 1965 and received his Doctorate from the University of Western Ontario in 1969. During and after his Doctorate research, he worked for Amax in Canada and for the Canadian and Australian companies of the ACA Howe Group in Canada, California, Australia, Indonesia, Fiji and the Solomon Islands. In 1972-73 he joined Robertson Research and worked in UK, Burundi, Spain and Algeria. As an independent consultant, he worked in California and the UK until 1975 when he became Chief Geologist for British Nuclear Fuels for three years, selecting targets for their worldwide uranium exploration programme.

Cal’s friend and mentor, Mr A. C. A. (aka Peter) Howe had established an eponymous company in Canada, which has been in operation since the early 1960s. In 1978, Cal Armstrong opened the UK office of A C A Howe International Limited and was the Managing Director for 31 years. The staff and associates of both companies mourn the loss of Cal but will continue to provide professional services to the mineral exploration and mining industry worldwide, to the same high standards he set throughout his life.

Calvert Armstrong Memorial Fund

In recognition of Cal’s outstanding career as a geologist providing a high standard of service to the mineral exploration and mining industry worldwide, a Memorial Fund is to be established with the support of his family, friends and professional colleagues. Cal was known throughout the industry as a man of great integrity and vision. He was highly respected by colleagues and clients and it is fitting that his valuable professional contribution should be remembered.

The Memorial Fund will be at Manchester University, where Cal graduated in 1965, specifically to be used through the Department of Geology. Detailed aspects are currently being developed in conjunction with the University, having regard to charities legislation and other relevant aspects.

The aim is for this to be a lasting memorial, providing, for example, bursaries or prizes for geological studies, although the form it takes will depend on the amount of contributions received.
